nearly 100 people have been detained<\/a>\u00a0by Immigration and Customs Enforcement; however, it remains unclear how many of those individuals had criminal records.<\/p>\nWTTW News spoke with business owners about the impact they are seeing.<\/p>\n
Veronica Perez, a lifelong resident of Little Village and owner of Jesse\u2019s Flowers, said sales have plummeted since President Donald Trump took office.\u00a0It\u2019s a drastic drop she hasn\u2019t\u00a0seen since the pandemic.<\/p>\n
\u201cNobody wants to come out,\u201d Perez said. \u201cThey want to be stuck inside, and they don\u2019t want to even send the kids to school, and I don\u2019t think that\u2019s right. \u2026\u00a0I walk down 26th Street and I don\u2019t see people, especially at night.\u201d<\/p>\n
As fears of ICE sightings spread, Jennifer Aguilar, the executive director of the Little Village Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber is doing everything possible to mobilize and protect the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople expected maybe branded ICE trucks,\u201d Aguilar said, \u201cand now we\u2019re seeing that it\u2019s all sorts of federal law enforcement showing up in cars that have tinted windows. \u2026 So it\u2019s just new tactics that are being used that we didn\u2019t expect.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the last two weeks, the stretch of 26th Street in Little Village \u2014\u00a0known as the\u00a0city\u2019s\u00a0second busiest\u00a0business\u00a0corridor \u2014 has been described as a ghost town.<\/p>\n
\u201cBusinesses have been sharing that they have been seeing drops in sales from about 50-60%, especially during the weekdays, but weekends, which are the strongest and most packed days here on 26 Street, have also been affected,\u201d Aguilar said.<\/p>\n
Restaurant Los Candiles is among the impacted businesses. Clarita Lopez, one of the owners, said lunchtime is typically the busiest time \u2014 but recently, the restaurant has only served a handful of customers.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt feels like we are in the pandemic or worse,\u201d Lopez said in Spanish. \u201cTrump promised to raise the economy, and what\u2019s happening is bringing it down, and I hope we don\u2019t continue this way because our business could be in jeopardy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lopez said the family business has been operating in the neighborhood for more than 29 years.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis affects everyone with or without papers,\u201d Lopez said in Spanish. \u201cI think we all depend on each other, and now people are carrying this fear if there\u2019s raids or if people are being taken. People are truly scared to leave their homes.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the Back of the Yards neighborhood,\u00a0the manager of Super Mercados El G\u00fcero y M\u00e9xico shared the same sentiment.<\/p>\n
He said although sales have declined,\u00a0he noticed\u00a0customers are coming in to purchase groceries in bulk to minimize the number of trips to the grocery store. Now he worries that fear in the community will lead to chaos rather than unity.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a sentiment shared by others in the area, some of whom have called Chicago home for decades.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was first like, \u2018Oh, we\u2019ll just come after criminals, help us out and we\u2019ll leave everybody alone,\u2019\u201d Aguilar said, \u201cbut to them criminals are just people who may have completely clean records, but just the fact that being here without the documentation is enough to make them a criminal and that\u2019s what worrisome and that\u2019s what puts everybody at risk.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
