Before it was known as \u201cLa Villita,\u201d Little Village\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org\/pages\/1174.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saw an influx<\/a>\u00a0of German, Czech, and Polish immigrants following the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. At that time, many people worked in the nearby factories, and it has been a working-class community ever since.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1970s, Little Village started to become known as the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/travel\/united-states\/little-village-neighborhood-chicago\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El M\u00e9xico del Medio Oeste<\/a>,\u201d as more Mexican Americans moved into the community. Today, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/voice-it\/ct-the-landmark-that-welcomes-mexicans-in-the-midwest-20180918-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">terracotta arch towering over 26th Street<\/a>\u00a0greets people with \u201cBienvenidos a Little Village.\u201d The arch, designed by Mexican architect Adrian Lozano, was built in 1990 to acknowledge the influence of Mexican culture in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Little Village hosts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.villapalooza.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Villapalooza<\/a>\u00a0every year, an annual music festival promoting arts, culture, and community engagement. Every September, the neighborhood also hosts a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicago.gov\/city\/en\/depts\/dca\/supp_info\/parade21.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">large annual parade<\/a>\u00a0in honor of Mexican Independence Day with colorful floats, mariachi bands, and dancing.<\/p>\n<p>Little Village is also home to Cook County Jail, one of the largest jails in the United States, where most inmates are awaiting trial. The jail first opened in 1929 when it was just one building. The 96-acre property now has 11 different divisions.
