Little Village Chamber of Commerce Will Grant $100,000 in Scholarships
September 3, 2015 – The Little Village Chamber of Commerce (LVCC) along with the Together We Can Program announced today that they have partnered to grant $100,000 in scholarships to outstanding students of Mexican-American descent, who are in financial need and reside in the Little Village community and surrounding areas in Chicago.
The scholarship is made possible by a generous grant from the Together We Can Program to the Little Village Chamber of Commerce. The scholarships will be provided in November to the students at UIC and St. Augustine College who are of Mexican-American decent, and who receive institutional scholarships, are eligible to apply for the Little Village Chamber of Commerce scholarship.
“Together We Can supports programs and actions that contribute to a prosperous integration of the Mexican community in the United States”, said Josefina Vázquez Mota, honorary president of Together We Can.
Mario Galindo, President, Little Village Chamber of Commerce stated, “I want to thank the Together We Can Program, UIC and St. Augustine College for helping us create such a significant scholarship fund that will have a great impact in our community,”
A review committee will select the winners of scholarships offered in various amounts ($5,000, $2,500, $2,000 and $1,000.) Additional requirements for consideration include: grade point average, community service, reside in the Little Village or surrounding areas of Chicago, have financial need, and be a graduating high school senior or enrolled at UIC or St. Augustine College.
Andrew C. Sund, Ph.D., President, St. Augustine College, added “We are pleased to participate in this initiative that will pave the way for more people in our community to attain the dream of a college degree.”
“Nearly two-thirds of UIC students received grants or scholarships last year,” said UIC Admissions Director Oscar Rodriguez. “We expect that many UIC students who are eligible for the scholarships will be eager to apply and we are pleased that the scholarships will assist students in our neighboring community. “
